Root Canal Treatment:

Root Canal Treatment is the dental procedure which fixes a tooth by removing the pulp chamber of the tooth and filling it with the filling material. Root Canal treatment is suggested for the badly infected tooth, or the tooth with significant decay. In Early statges of dentistry, such tooth were extracted. But today in Modern Dentistry these teeth can be salvaged by the Root Canal Specilist( also known as endodontist). A root canal is performed when the tooth cannot be filled or restored any other way because the decay has reached the nerve of the tooth causing severe pain or the tooth has become infected.

In order to save such tooth, root canal treatment is performed.
In the situation that a tooth is considered so threatened (because of decay, cracking, etc.) that future infection is considered likely or inevitable, a pulpectomy, removal of the pulp tissue, is advisable to prevent such infection. Usually, some inflammation and/or infection is already present within or below the tooth. To cure the infection and save the tooth, the dentist drills into the pulp chamber and removes the infected pulp and then drills the nerve out of the root canal(s) with long needle-shaped drills. After this is done, the dentist fills each of the root canals and the chamber with an inert material and seals up the opening. This procedure is known as root canal therapy. With the removal of nerves and blood supply from the tooth, it is best that the tooth be fitted with a crown which increases the prognosis of the tooth by six times.

When the space is totally cleaned and dried, filling of the hole may now commence to prevent food parcels and other foreign bodies to get inside. In case you have an on-going infection, temporary sealing may be indicated until such time that it has completely healed. Sometimes, small wires are inserted for additional support since the teeth becomes brittle in the absence of blood vessels.

Immediately after the root canal therapy, the patient is instructed to take pain relievers as means of protecting self once anesthesia wears off. Antibiotic may also be prescribed to control spread of infection or even prevent its occurrence.
